ENGLISH Johnny Armstrong is a black mass of contradictions: an Irishman with an English accent and a Scottish name; raised in Saudi Arabia; looks like a Viking; has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from a liberal arts college; and works as a comedian in Germany (of all places). He has won a multitude of awards with his unique brand of stand-up. His material is a manifestation of inconsequentiality, marinated in self-deprecation, seasoned with wordplay, and served with a hefty portion of dark humour. Johnny's trailblazing career — from Berlin poetry slams to numerous appearances on German, Austrian and Swiss TV — inspired and paved the way for a generation of comedians, both laying the foundations of the Berlin comedy scene and sparking the current, German stand-up boom.
